Okay what is this secret for excelling at your job?
You can choose to unveil this secret in your life as an experiment.. Look at someone you admire in your life who seems to be doing really well in their profession.
You’ll notice that in addition to doing what’s necessary i.e. their core work they also do additional things. Things which may not be expected or even necessary. This seems to give them their edge.
You must have seen some people grow exceptionally faster than their peers. On the surface, it may look like they aren’t doing anything additional. However, if you
look closely you’ll notice that big winners in any profession have a secret to their growth.
Before I let you in on this secret, you have to understand that simply knowing the secret isn’t going to help you.
As a professional, do more than what’s expected out of you and your growth is inevitable. For example: If your job is in sales, making the sales is an obvious
requirement, however ensuring the customer has a seamless after sales experience may not be your “job” but maybe you go that extra mile to see a happy customer.
Of course in no way take on more than what you can do, but this really is a secret to growing in any profession. It could mean learning additional skills, being kinder, showing more empathy, going the extra mile, all things
that may not seem necessary but could make life easier for a customer or even a fellow colleague.
Doing your core job is what you’re getting paid for, doing more than what you’re required with enthusiasm will always earn you more good will and growth.
However, like I mentioned, please use your discretion before doing more of what you’re already doing. I’m in no way suggesting doing more things and becoming
overwhelmed. The point is to be professional, do what's required and then if you see it fit go that extra distance.
This could mean taking an online class to learn more skills, and practicing more of your current skills all in addition to what is required of you. The only condition to doing this is do these but not at the cost of your health.
All right, if you’re ready to put this insight into action, jump into it.
Are you doing what’s required at your job? The bare minimum.. What’s needed? (If not then caution this isn’t for you)
What are some things you can do additionally that may directly or indirectly influence your performance at work?
Things such as: Learning a skill that will enhance performance, communication skills, public speaking, etiquettes training,
any other technical skills
Sign up for an online class, make the time to study. I call this the personal development hour (depending on your
schedule, do this daily/ weekly) remember personal development is not something you listen to, watch or even think about, it’s something you have to do!
Observe how it influences your performance at work (if you don’t feel
stressed continue with it or move onto something else. Discontinue if it makes you feel overwhelmed)
